PHILOSOPHY

Orthomolecular psychiatry addresses mental health conditions by correcting underlying biochemical imbalances through targeted nutrient therapy. Rooted in Dr. Linus Pauling’s concept of using “the right molecules in the right amounts,” this approach involves therapeutic doses of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and fatty acids—often beyond standard dietary levels and typically used short term—to optimize brain function. I often integrate principles of orthomolecular psychiatry into my broader treatment approach, particularly when addressing drug-induced nutrient depletions, high-stress, gut dysbiosis, or nutritionally depleted diets. For example, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine have been shown to deplete sodium and methylfolate (the active form of folate), which are critical for mood regulation and neurotransmitter synthesis, among other things. Similarly, stimulant medications like Adderall (dextroamphetamine-amphetamine) may lower magnesium and zinc levels—minerals essential for emotional regulation, sleep, and focus. Recognizing and correcting these depletions is key to more effective, individualized care.

In rare cases, I recommend advanced functional lab testing through Rupa Health to guide care. Based on clinical presentation, treatment history, and patient preference, this may include testing for organic acids, the GI-MAP, NutrEval, or other panels to uncover nutrient deficiencies, gut imbalances, or metabolic dysfunctions.

Treatment protocols are personalized but often include foundational nutrients such as B vitamins, magnesium, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, and sometimes specific amino acids that support neurotransmitter production and cognitive function. This integrative, data-informed approach enhances outcomes in conditions like depression, anxiety, ADHD, and autism spectrum disorders. I use Fullscript as a streamlined, evidence-based platform for patients to access practitioner-grade supplements at reduced prices through my provider account. The platform is free to use and offers enhanced features for managing supplement protocols and evidence-based education and resources with convenience.
